Vols Sink College of Charleston, 14-1
February 22, 2000 | Baseball
Stevie Daniel went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a home run to lead the Volunteers to a 14-1 victory over College of Charleston on Monday.
Tennessee (9-4) was playing their fourth game in as many days while trying to wrap up an 11-game road swing. The Vols, fresh off a tournament appearance at The Citadel, garnered their second consecutive win over the Cougars.
Behind the pitching of senior Kurt Scott (1-0), the Vols sat down the Cougar batters in order in the first three innings. The UT pitching staff pitched its first combined no-hitter of the season. The no-hitter was the first thrown against College of Charleston in the history of their program. The Vols got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Kris Bennett hit a RBI single to score Stevie Daniel and give UT a 1-0 lead.
Things began to roll for Tennessee in the top of the fourth when Ryan Moffett set the tone for the inning by punching a solo home run over the center field fence. UT would gain seven run on four hits and a grand slam by Brian Gates to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Cougars never got close in this one as Tennessee added four insurance runs in top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Tennessee will return home for a 12-game homestand beginning with Appalachian State on Saturday. Tennessee will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon and will complete the series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest.
