Vols Deny The Citadel, 5-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Kris Bennett went 2-for-4 with two RBI to boost Tennessee to a 5-3 victory over The Citadel in the final game of the Winn-Dixie Shootout on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (4-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks impart to two Tennessee errors. With two outs remaining, David Griffin slapped a grounder to third baseman Kris Bennett but Bennett misread the throw to first that allowed Dallas McPherson to score.
The Vols (8-4) battled back in the sixth inning when Kris Bennett avenged his earlier error by connecting on a center field single to score Stevie Daniel who led off the inning with a single.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kris Bennett once again came up strong for the Vols at the plate. Bennett popped another center field single to give Stevie Daniel his second run of the game while giving Tennessee a 2-1 lead. The Citadel defense recorded two straight errors that led to two more Volunteer runs giving the squad a 5-1 lead.
The Citadel got two runs in the ninth when Daryl Byrd hit a RBI single to score Stuart Jordan. The final run of the game came off a wild pitch by Jordan DeJong that scored Byrd.
Junior pitcher Jordan DeJong (2-1) went the distance for the first time this season. DeJong tossed nine strikeouts while giving up five hits on the evening. Randy Corn (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Tennessee will wrap up an 11-game road swing tomorrow afternoon when they take on the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. at Remley's Point in Charleston, S.C..
