Dr. Chris Klenck enters his 19th season as the head team physician on the Tennessee Sports Medicine staff in 2024-25.
He was selected as the 2022 SEC Team Physician of the Year, as voted on by the sports medicine staff at each school in the Southeastern Conference—recognized for excellence as a primary care M.D.
Klenck served as Tennessee’s representative on the critically important SEC Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force, which was formed in the spring of 2020 in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Its purpose is providing the guidance necessary to make decisions related to the return to athletics activities for SEC student-athletes and to assist in the SEC’s collaboration with colleague conferences in supporting the safe and healthy conduct of athletics competition.
Klenck and members of the task force were recipients of the Michael L. Slive Distinguished Service Award in June 2021.
Klenck came to Knoxville in November 2006 following a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Indiana University Medical Center. He had served the Indianapolis hospital since June 2001 in the positions of Internal Medicine/Pediatrics intern, resident and chief resident.Â
During fellowship training, Klenck was an assistant team physician for the Indianapolis Colts preseason training camps and assisted at Purdue University, his alma mater. He worked the NFL Scouting Combines in Indianapolis, has NCAA championships experience and served as a team physician in the Indiana high school ranks.
He has earned board certifications in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Primary Care Sports Medicine. In January 2013, he was named the Sports Medicine Person of the Year by the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society (TATS).
An Evansville, Indiana, native, Klenck earned his doctor of pharmacy degree from Purdue before completing his doctor of medicine degree at Indiana University School of Medicine.
He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Physicians, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and American College of Sports Medicine.
Klenck is married to the former Laura Botto of Dayton, Ohio. They are the parents of three children: Jacob, Ben and Ella.
