Bill Martin joined Tennessee's strategic communications team in February of 2020 as Assistant Athletics Director of Football Communications, and he was promoted to Associate Athletics Director of Strategic Communications in July 2023. With 24 years of Southeastern Conference experience, Martin oversees the day-to-day operations of the strategic communications office and works closely with the football program to implement and execute communications strategies aimed at advancing the Vols' brand. He serves on UT's executive staff and helps provide oversight to the football creative content team.Â
Martin enters his sixth season as the football program's chief strategic communications contact in 2025. He's coordinated media operations for a College Football Playoff team in 2024 and the 2022 squad that rose to No. 1 in the initial CFP rankings. Under his leadership, Tennessee was the recipient of the Football Writers Association of America's 2024 Super 11 Award, given annually to the best performing communications departments in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Martin has promoted a 2022 National Player of the Year finalist in Hendon Hooker, the program's first Biletnikoff Award winner in Jalin Hyatt and two SEC Offensive Players of the Year in Hooker (2022) and Dylan Sampson (2024).
Prior to coming to Tennessee, Martin spent six years overseeing the entire Athletic Communications operation at Mississippi State from 2014-20. He served as Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in June 2017 and Senior Associate Athletic Director in July 2019. In Starkville, Martin served as the athletic department's spokesperson and chief communications contact for Bulldogs football. He also managed a staff that was responsible for publicity and strategic communications of the department's 16 varsity sports, social media and photography. MSU was a three-time recipient of the FWAA Super 11 Award (2015, 2018, 2019) under his watch. Martin promoted eight All-Americans, including Dak Prescott, who recorded the highest Heisman Trophy voting finish in program history in 2014, a year that saw the Bulldogs spend five weeks ranked No. 1 nationally.
Prior to Martin's tenure on the executive staff at MSU, he spent six years as an associate director of communications at his alma mater, LSU, where he was the top communications assistant for football and the primary contact for women's basketball. He also oversaw the department's student intern program and assisted in communications for the baseball team during NCAA Regional, Super Regional and College World Series play. Martin promoted four football national award winners during his tenure in Baton Rouge, including 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu and National Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Peterson.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Martin served as a post-graduate communications intern at Florida in 2008, working closely with the Gators' men's and women's golf teams and assisting with men's basketball communications.Â
Martin got his start in the athletic communications field as a student intern at LSU where he earned his undergraduate degree. He served as the primary communications contact for the swimming and diving program, the secondary contact for the baseball team, and he was a student communications assistant with the football program, including the 2003 and 2007 national championship seasons. His wife, Ali, also is an LSU graduate who boasts professional experience in intercollegiate athletics development at multiple SEC schools.
The couple has a three-year-old daughter, Addie.Â
