Matias Marin (mahr-IN) has made a remarkable impact in his inaugural year as the associate head coach for the Lady Volunteers. Since joining the squad in June of 2023, Marin was named the 2024 ITA Ohio Valley Assistant Coach of the Year and has produced two All-Americans for the Lady Vols, marking the first instance since 2019.
His ongoing contributions have played a vital role in the program's continued success. Under his guidance, the team has achieved new levels of excellence, securing 22 wins, marking the highest number of victories for the second consecutive season. This accomplishment represents the first time since 2002-03 that the Lady Vols have produced back-to-back seasons with at least 21 victories.
Throughout the season 2023-24 season, the Lady Vols have knocked off 12 ranked opponents, including six in the top 25, notably defeating No. 1 Oklahoma State.
Marin's influence extends beyond coaching, as he played a crucial role in recruiting the No. 13 ranked recruiting class in the nation, according to the 2024 Winter recruiting class rankings, powered by Tennis Recruiting Network.
In his inaugural season, Marin has also been instrumental in nurturing Esther Adeshina, recipient of the 2024 ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award. Adeshina demonstrates a diverse array of leadership traits, evident both on and off the tennis courts. Originating from Bracknell, Great Britain, she has devoted four years to Rocky Top, achieving numerous accolades. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first individual from the SEC and/or the University of Tennessee to receive this prestigious award.
Marin boasts 11 years of experience coaching at the club level, most recently serving as the Director of Tennis at the Tucker Tennis Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During his tenure, the club was awarded the prestigious USTA Developmental Program of the Year honor in 2014. The organization is widely known for its track record of developing collegiate-level talent.
"In addition to being an outstanding coach, what I love most about Matias is that he and his family fit our current culture," Ojeda continued. "In this ever-changing world of college athletics, I know he will help me prioritize the core of our program's values. We will make sure to always care for our student-athletes well-being, while pushing them to achieve greatness both on and off the court. When you face adversity together, you build life-long relationships and that, to me, is what winning is all about."
Marin has a history of success in the NCAA Division I ranks, winning the 2004 NCAA National Championship as a student-athlete at Baylor. Marin delivered the clinching point for the Bears over North Carolina, serving an ace for the match as a senior and a team captain. During his time in Waco, he went 106-35 in singles and 79-28 in doubles.
"I would like to thank Alison and the University of Tennessee for this incredible opportunity," Marin said. "I am beyond excited to become a part of this family. I can't wait to start working with this amazing group of players and continue to support them in their success on and off the court. I would also like to thank my wife and two kids for all of their support in this new chapter. Go Lady Vols!"
Marin is a USPTA Certified Professional, USTA High Performance Coach, and an Argentinean National Certified Coach.
Marin originally hails from Rosario, Argentina, and has a wife, Georgi, and two children, Martina and Ignacio (nicknamed Nacho).
