Tennessee soccer head coach Joe Kirt announced the hiring of Sam Black as the Director of Soccer Performance.
"I am incredibly excited for Sam to join our soccer program," said Kirt. "A consummate professional, Sam is fully committed to our player's individual development, injury prevention and performance.
"He will design and implement standards and recovery strategies to ensure our players are prepared to perform at their best each and every time they take the field. He's a proven winner, and we look forward to Sam being an integral part of our program and future championships at Tennessee."
Black, joins the the Lady Vols from St. Louis CITY SC of Major League Soccer, where he served as a performance coach with MLS side St. Louis CITY SC and St. Louis City SC 2, the club's MLS Next Pro affiliate.
Throughout his time there, St. Louis CITY SC 2 notched a fifth-place finish and postseason playoff berth (2023) and a second-place finish and conference championship in 2024. Additionally, Black aide in the development of several academy players who have gone on to gain first team experience and youth national team caps.
Prior to joining St. Louis CITY, Black served as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Marshall University. He was a member of Marshall’s 2020 NCAA National Staff of the Year, after helping Marshall to the National Championship title that year.
Additionally, Black had stints at Vanderbilt and Texas in various strength and conditioning internship roles.
On top of his time at Vanderbilt, Black spent time in the mid-state from 2013-16, as he played collegiately for Belmont and then served as a graduate assistant and strength coach .
