WATCH: Getting To Know Roman Tubner (Part 1) | Getting To Know Roman Tubner (Part 2)
Roman Tubner joined Tennessee Athletics on April 16, 2024, as Kim Caldwell named him an assistant on her first staff as head coach of the Lady Vols.
Tubner, who is in his second year in Knoxville and 13th season in the women’s game, has accumulated a 219-146 record as a full-time coach at eight schools. The teams he has helped lead have recorded seven postseason appearances (6 NCAA, 1 WNIT), two conference championships and a conference tournament title. They also carded two league tourney runner-up showings and a second-place league finish as well.
During his first year in Knoxville, Tubner attended the 2024 SEC Coaches Opportunity Forum in Atlanta. Created as a result of SEC Bylaw 23, the forum was implemented in 2021 to promote opportunities in paths to leadership. The goal is to empower participants with knowledge, skills and resources necessary to progress toward head coaching positions in their respective sports.
Tubner helped UT card a 24-10 overall record and an 8-8 mark in SEC play in 2024-25, notching notable wins over Florida State, Iowa, Ohio State and eventual NCAA champ UConn, the first by UT over the Huskies since 2007 in the interrupted series. The Big Orange advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished the season ranked 15th and 16th, respectively, in the AP and USA TODAY/WBCA Coaches Polls.
Tennessee set school and SEC records in 2024-25 for points (139), three-pointers made (30) and threes attempted (63) vs. N.C. Central on Dec. 14. The treys made also eclipsed NCAA (M/W), NBA and WNBA bests, while the point total ranked fifth in NCAA women’s history. Additionally, UT tallied the most treys made (343) and attempted (1,054) in a season at UT, also setting SEC bests in those areas. UT’s 86.6 points per game stood fourth in school annals and eighth in the SEC record book.   Â
On the recruiting front, Tubner had a lead role in helping secure early success for the staff. The first portal class featured Zee Spearman and Ruby Whitehorn playing lead roles for the 2024-25 squad. UT then signed a 2025 high school class ranked No. 1 or 2 (Mia Pauldo, Deniya Prawl, Jaida Civil, Lauren Hurst, Mya Pauldo) and added the top portal class of 2025 (Janiah Barker, Nya Robertson, Jersey Wolfenbarger), according to ESPN.
Â
Tubner arrived on Rocky Top after spending three seasons on Kristy Curry’s staff as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Alabama, earning a promotion to associate head coach in 2023 as the Crimson Tide went 64-35 during his tenure. During that span, UA earned three postseason berths that included NCAA appearances in the 2023 and 2024 tournaments following a WNIT quarterfinal result in 2022.
Â
A 2019 selection to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 30 Under Thirty, a member of Silver Waves Media’s 2023 list of the 50 Most Impactful Assistants and a finalist for the 2023 World Exposure Report Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach of the Year, he helped the Crimson Tide to three consecutive 20+ win seasons for the first time since 1999, including a 24-victory campaign in 2023-24 that was Bama’s finest since 1998.
Â
The 2023-24 unit forged a 24-10 overall record and 10-6 SEC mark, tying for fourth place and earning the league tourney’s No. 4 seed. The Tide later advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the program’s first win in that event since 2021.
Â
A contributing factor to that on-court success was UA’s effort in recruiting, where he directed the charge in the signing or commitment of 16 players during his tenure as recruiting coordinator. He recruited and assisted in the development of two All-SEC players (Sarah Ashlee Barker, Aaliyah Nye) who went on to be selected #9 by the LA Sparks and #13 by the Las Vegas Aces in the 2025 WNBA Draft and an SEC All-Freshman selection (Essence Cody) in 2023-24. He also helped land a 2023 recruiting class ranked No. 11 by espnW and a portal class rated No. 25 by 247Sports and Brandon Clay Scouting that season as well. The signing group included Cody, Reychel Douglas and Naomi Jones.
From the time he arrived in Tuscaloosa, the Tide elevated from 20-14/6-10 (10th) with a WNIT quarterfinal berth in 2021-22 to 20-11/9-7 (t5th) and an NCAA appearance in 2022-23 before the next step forward in 2023-24. During that window, he coached SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Hannah Barber and All-SEC First Team selection Brittany Davis, the No. 36 overall pick by the Las Vegas Aces in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
Â
Prior to his stint at Alabama, Tubner spent a season at Ball State under head coach Brady Sallee. He assisted for a 14-11/12-8 (6th, MAC) Cardinal squad and worked primarily with the point guards, developing All-MAC Honorable Mention selection Sydney Freeman.
Â
In 2019-20, he served as an assistant coach to Karen Barefoot at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. While there, he recruited 2021 All-Colonial Athletic Association Sixth Player of the Year ZaNautica Downs and worked with three student-athletes who garnered All-Colonial Athletic Association honors.
Â
Tubner spent a season in Terre Haute, Ind., in 2018-19, holding the position of assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Indiana State. He helped the Sycamores produce their highest scoring average in five years and reeled in one of the top recruiting classes in the Missouri Valley Conference en route to being named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 30 Under Thirty list.
Â
From 2017-18, Tubner gained experience as an assistant at Austin Peay, where he helped lead the Governors to 16 wins, the most for the program in a decade. He also helped develop Brianne Alexander into an All-OVC First Team selection.
Â
Prior to his stop at APSU, Tubner logged three years at Arkansas Tech from 2014-17. While there, he assisted the Golden Suns to a 72-19 record and three NCAA Division II Tournaments, two regular-season Great American Conference championships (2014-15, 2015-16) and a league tourney title (2015-16). Tech also carded a second-place conference regular season finish in 2016-17 and tourney runner-up showings in 2014-15 and 2016-17. Â
Â
Tubner got his start in coaching at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, where he worked from 2011-13 as a men’s basketball graduate assistant before being promoted to assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2013-14 campaign. He helped the 2011-12 UAM men’s team to 21 wins and coached two DII All-Americans while with that program.
Â
A graduate of Montgomery (Ala.) Catholic High School, Tubner was a three-sport athlete in high school who went on to play at Centenary College in Louisiana. He graduated from Centenary with a bachelor’s in psychology in 2011 and earned his master’s from Arkansas-Monticello in 2012 with studies in physical education and coaching. He is married to the former Kyndra Daniels, and they have two daughters: Skylar and Rhian.
