Maxine McPeak of Jacskon and husband, Robert, hadn't been to a game at Neyland Stadium in about 10 years, but their homecoming on Homecoming Day 2003 was worth the trip, if not the wait. That's because Maxine was named the "Fan of the Game" at the Duke game Nov. 1 somewhere around 2:01 p.m. at Gate 10 at the stadium's southwest corner. She is the fifth fan so chosen this season. Karen Hellmund of Van Elkins and Associates, the Knoxville company overseeing the promotion each home game, made the selection. Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing Chip Bryant made the presentation. "I hadn't heard a thing about this contest, and I didn't know why they were asking me to step to the side when I came into the stadium," Maxine said. "I was shocked, but I'm glad they did. "We had gone to games on the road, but this makes me want to come back here." Maxine is retired from Porter Cable in Jackson, while Robert is retired from James River Printing Corporation, also in Jackson. Mrs. McPeak receives a $2,500 gift certificate from World Travel, a 25-inch television courtesy of Philips, a $250 Big Orange Checking Account from First Tennessee Bank and $250 worth of gift certificates from BreadBox, Goody's and Kroger. "I thought, `Here we go, they're trying to sell me something,'" she said. "We like to travel, and I'm already thinking about a place to put the television." The grand prize winner, to be selected at the Vanderbilt game Nov. 22, will receive a Sea Ray 185 Sport, a Toyota Tundra truck courtesy of Volunteer Toyota Dealers, two season tickets to all UT athletic events for the 2004 season, $250 worth of gift certificates from each sponsor and the opportunity to run through the "T." | ||
