Only Florida's 16 honorees and LSU's 15 bettered the Vols' total. Tennessee leads the conference with 115 selections to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in the Bill Webb era (1996-present).
On the baseball side, two-time honorees Patrick Hicklen and Dusty Johnson were part of a Tennessee-record 13 baseball student-athletes who were named to the 2004 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor this spring. The academic honor roll is based on grades from the 2003 Summer, 2003 Fall and 2004 Spring terms.
"I'm really proud of the way our student-athletes worked in the classroom this past year," said head coach Rod Delmonico, who has seen 56 Volunteers earn a spot on the SEC honor roll during his tenure. "We want them to be the best they can both on and off the field. To have nearly half our roster make the honor roll is a tribute to both the students and the academic advisors at the Thornton Center. They really pushed our guys to excel in the classroom and it paid off."
Hicklen and Johnson were one of five baseball Vols who also graduated this spring. Hicklen earned a degree in sport management and Johnson earnded his degree in finance. The others were Derek Tharpe (speech communication), Ben Riley (sport management) and Brett Chappell (sociology).
Five members of the Tennessee men's golf team were among the 69 Volunteers student-athletes named to the 2004 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, as announced last week by league commissioner Mike Slive. The Vols' club-toting quintet of honorees included John Brannen, Clint Cromwell, John Scott Rattan, Chris Robinson and Brandon Skeen.
Brannen, a redshirt freshman from Clarksville, is majoring in biochemistry and cellular & molecular biology. He tied for 50th this past season when the Vols played host to the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at Holston Hills Country Club. Cromwell is a sophomore who hails from Savannah and majors in psychology. He participated in the 2004 Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, finishing tied for 35th.
The 2004 season was a breakout year for Rattan, a junior from Montgomery Village, Md. The psychology major finished in the top 25 in eight of the 12 events in which he competed. He also turned in his highest finish as a Vol, carding a 69-71-71--211 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
Robinson, a sophomore from Memphis, majors in classical civilization. His only appearance of 2004 came at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, where he finished tied for 67th.
The fifth and final Vols honoree is accounting major Skeen, a junior from Jefferson City. In 2004, he played in the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate and the Landfall Tradition, finishing fifth, tied for 60th and tied for 58th, respectively.
Wade Orr, a senior on the Tennessee men's tennis team, represented the Vols netters on the 2004 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, as announced last week by league commissioner Mike Slive. The Clarksville native has now received the honor in three consecutive seasons.
An industrial engineering major, Orr wrapped up his Big Orange career at last month's NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. While the Vols failed to reach the championship round of 16, Orr finished his career boasting the rare distinction of having been a part of three NCAA semifinalist teams in past years (2000-02).
This past season, Orr posted a 12-7 singles record and finished with a national ITA singles ranking of No. 117. In doubles, he tied for the team lead with 20 victories. His final career numbers stand at 62-57 (.521) in singles and 50-28 (.641) in doubles.
Past academic honors for Orr include being named to the 2003 CoSIDA academic all-district IV at-large team and earning EdAmerica Scholar Athlete of the Month honors this past January. Orr plans on attending law school or entering the engineering graduate program at UT.
