April 01, 2026 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee left-handed pitcher Cam Appenzeller earned midseason accolades from Baseball America and Perfect Game on Wednesday.
The talented southpaw was one of 15 players tabbed to Baseball America's Midseason Freshman of the Year Award Watch List and was also named to Perfect Game's Midseason Freshman All-America First Team.
A highly-touted prospect entering his freshman season, Appenzeller has lived up to the hype and then some for the Vols, emerging as the team's top relief pitcher. The Chatham, Illinois, native is 3-0 with a save and leads the team with a 1.37 ERA in nine appearances this year. Appenzeller also boasts an impressive 0.76 WHIP and has racked up 29 strikeouts while allowing just four walks over 26.1 innings of work.
The talented lefty has elevated his game to another level during SEC play, as he has yet to allow a run in three appearances, tossing 13.1 shutout innings with 13 strikeouts and just one walk in outings against Georgia, Missouri and Vanderbilt.
In his most recent appearance, Appenzeller threw a career-best six shutout innings while allowing just four hits on the road against Vanderbilt.
Prior to that, Appenzeller was the driving force behind UT's game-two win over Missouri, posting 4.2 scoreless innings of relief against the Tigers, allowing just two hits while striking out a career-best seven batters to earn his first SEC victory. He entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the fifth inning and retired the next three batters in order to get the Vols out of the jam unscathed.
