Scott Earns First SEC Freshman of the Week Honor
March 25, 2026 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Katrina Scott of the University of Tennessee women's tennis team has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday.
"Katrina's win against Texas says a lot," Tennessee associate head coach Robin Goodman said, "but it's really just a reflection of who she is. To come in mid-year, step into a new environment, and compete the way she has takes a level of grit, humility, and belief that you can't fake. She's earned everything she's getting right now."
It is the first conference weekly honor for a Lady Vol this season and is the first SEC Freshman of the Week honor for a Tennessee player since Elza Tomase earned the nod on Jan. 26, 2022.
The Los Angeles native defeated the nation's top-ranked singles player, Texas' Carmen Herea, in straight sets Sunday in Tennessee's 4-2 victory over the No. 7 Longhorns. Scott won a tight 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker first set, then dominated to a 6-2 showing in the second stanza to claim the decision, handing the Lady Vols their second dual point. The triumph over the ITA's No. 1 player was Scott's third ranked singles victory of the season.
"Seeing Katrina win that first set this weekend was a huge energy boost for the rest of the team," Lady Vol Senior Cat Aulia said of her teammate's performance. "She is such a fighter and puts everything she has into every match she plays, so just being able to go out there and compete with her is so much fun.
"She is in a tough position playing at the number one spot," Aulia continued, "but she rises to the occasion every time and I am so happy that she was able to get the win this weekend."
Scott's win was the first singles victory by a Lady Vol over even a national top-three opponent since at least the 2020 dual season.
Scott added a 6-3 doubles set win alongside Maeve Thornton, defeating Texas' Herea/Ngijol-Carre tandem to help Tennessee to a 1-0 start in the dual with the Longhorns.
Scott and No. 12 Tennessee take on the Bellarmine Knights at Barksdale Stadium Wednesday before continuing SEC action with two home matchups against Vanderbilt and Missouri this weekend.
