Messimer Ties For Third; Lady Vols Finish Fifth at Canadian Collegiate Invitational

AURORA, Ontario - Tennessee women's golfer Madison Messimer logged a top-three finish at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational as the Lady Vols placed fifth as a team.
Messimer, a true freshman, came up big in both rounds for the Big Orange after carding 3-under 69 in round one and 2-under 70 in the second round. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native had a steady showing thanks to a combined 25 pars and eight birdies across two rounds.
After a tough start in round one, Tennessee bounced back in the second round the second round and carded an 8-under 280 to secure the fifth-place showing. The round-two score marked the second-lowest 18-hole team score in the field Tuesday.
Martina Lopez-Lanchares and Kyra Van Kan returned to form in round two after carding a pair of 3-under 69s.
Lopez-Lanchares, who is making her season debut, posted a top-20 finish as Kyra Van Kan placed inside the top 25.
Freshman Thitikarn Thapasit also improved upon her first-round score and shot even-par in the second and final round. Thapasit concluded the event tied for 34th.
The final member of the UT lineup, Sofie Engeseth, also tied for 34th after logging a 74 on Tuesday.
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols return home for their third event of the fall and are set to host he Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club. The 54-hole event runs from Sunday, Oct. 5 through Tuesday, Oct. 7.
