Tennessee Rowing Secures Second Consecutive Top-Five Finish at NCAA Championships
June 01, 2025 | Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The fourth-ranked Tennessee rowing team capped its historic 2025 campaign with a fifth-place team finish at the NCAA Championships Sunday morning on Lake Mercer in New Jersey, marking the program's second consecutive top-five national result under second-year head coach Kim Cupini.
Â
After placing a program-best third at the NCAA Championships a year ago, the Lady Vols followed that up with another milestone campaign in 2025, finishing fifth nationally in the team standings with 106 points—solidifying the most successful two-year stretch in school history. Prior to Cupini's arrival, Tennessee's highest finish at the national event across its previous five team appearances was ninth in 2007.
Â
The 1V8+ and 1V4+ crews both competed in Sunday's grand finals, while the 2V8+ earned a victory in the Petite Final to close out the three-day event.
Â
Tennessee's first varsity eight closed out its NCAA run with a fourth-place effort in the grand final, crossing in 6:10.912 behind No. 5 Yale (6:06.138), top-ranked Stanford and No. 2 Texas. The Lady Vols outpaced third-ranked Washington (6:12.538) and No. 8 Brown (6:14.088), capping a consistently strong postseason campaign for the boat in which it finished top-five at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.
Â
In the 1V4+ grand final, Tennessee finished sixth overall with a time of 7:12.228 to earn the boat's second consecutive top-six NCAA Championship finish.
Â
The UT second varsity eight posted a first-place finish in Sunday's 2V8 petite final with a time of 6:24.586, crossing the line ahead of five top-13 teams and recording the boat's second consecutive top-seven NCAA finish.
