May 15, 2025 | Track & Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tennessee true freshman Nick Reynolds earned UT's first medal of the 2025 SEC Outdoor Championships on Thursday, placing third in the men's javelin with a monumental toss in the third round. The 19-year-old from Concord, New Hampshire, launched the spear 76.69 meters (251-7) for a new lifetime-best, earning Tennessee's first SEC javelin medal since 2008.
Pending USATF ratification, Reynolds' performance will go down as the all-time American Junior Record. The mark surpassed Joe Zimmerman's previous U.S. U20 standard of 74.64m (244-10) by nearly seven feet. Of note, the American U20 all-time best is held by Sam Crouser at 77.84m (255-4) – but that performance was never ratified.
Additionally, Reynolds' mark ranks second on the 2025 U20 world list, fourth in Tennessee history and seventh in the NCAA this season.
Day 1 of the SEC Outdoor Championships concluded with Lady Vol sophomore Jillian Candelino scoring a point in the women's 10,000-meter final. The Jacksonville, Florida, native placed eighth in the conference with her time of 34:59.17.
MOVING ON: Tennessee had five athletes advance past prelims during Thursday's evening session on the track. Ka'Myya Haywood led off with the fourth-fastest time in the women's 800-meter prelims, clocking a season-best 2:04.37 to clinch a spot in the final for the second year in a row.
Nearly half of the SEC men's 400-meter hurdles final will feature Volunteers as UT had four qualify out of the preliminary round. Saad Hinti was second overall in 49.47 seconds, while Calvin Wetzel (50.06) and Harry Barton (50.10) went 1-2 in their heat with new personal-bests to automatically advance. Jevon Williams grabbed the ninth and final qualifying spot, turning in a time of 51.08.
UP NEXT: The SEC Outdoor Championships continue Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. with fifth-year senior Mikele Vickers competing in the women's long jump. Day 2 in Lexington will wrap up with the men's 3,000m steeplechase final at approximately 8:20 p.m
