#7 Tennessee Drops 4-1 Decision Against #2 Texas A&M

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The seventh-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision against No. 2 Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"We gave ourselves opportunities against one of the best teams in the country and didn't quite get it done," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "Credit to Texas A&M, they were better in key moments."
The Lady Vols (14-4, 8-3 SEC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage, grabbing the doubles point against the Aggies (19-2, 10-1 SEC). The pairing of Elza Tomase and Maeve Thornton commanded a 6-1 victory over the No. 33-ranked duo of Mary Stoiana and Lucciana Perry. The No. 44-ranked tandem of Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso etched a 6-3 triumph against Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov to secure the doubles point. Conley Raidt and Saray Yli-Piipari were ahead 5-3 against Nicole Khirin and Lexington Reed when play halted.
In singles, Tennessee could not capitalize off of its doubles momentum. Yli-Piipari dropped a 4-6, 3-6 affair to Lexington Reed. Thornton fell to No. 80 Daria Smetannikov in a 5-7, 3-6 contest. Vanesa Suarez could not fend off No. 40 Lucianna Perry, falling 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. No. 2 Mary Stoiana posted a 5-7, 6-7(4) decision over No. 7 Tomase to conclude play.
Up Next: The Lady Vols are set to face Florida on Friday to Barksdale Stadium. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
