March 22, 2025 | Track & Field
TAMPA, Fla. – Tennessee collected a pair of first-place finishes in the men's and women's 400-meter dash competitions to cap a successful opening weekend of the 2025 outdoor track & field campaign. Graduate student Jevon Williams earned victory for the Vols with his lifetime-best mark of 45.90 seconds, while Lady Vol freshman Esther Joseph won on the women's side with a time of 51.58.
Williams' mark currently ranks second on the 2025 NCAA Division I outdoor list and ties the No. 10 performer in Tennessee history. The Pompano Beach, Florida, native led four Vols in the top five at USF, as Saad Hinti (46.40) and Harry Barton (46.47) clocked outdoor PRs to finish second and third, respectively, while Andrew Brown finished fifth in the field with a time of 46.74.
Joseph's time of 51.58 set an early collegiate lead and shattered the previous Tennessee freshman record of 52.12 – set by current teammate Javonya Valcourt in 2023. The Nigerian rookie was followed closely by UT graduate student Cydney Wright, who finished second overall with a lifetime-best mark of 51.96 seconds.
UT's 400-meter wins were two of four event titles on Saturday in Tampa. Freshman Tula Fawbush made her collegiate debut with a first-place finish in the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:48.84, while the women's 4x400-meter quartet of Joseph, Ka'Myya Haywood, Myla Greene and Javonya Valcourt closed the meet with a win in 3:32.87. Most notably, Valcourt overcame a 30-meter deficit on the anchor leg, unofficially splitting a time of 49.3 seconds over the final 400 meters.
In addition to its four victories, the Big Orange tallied nine second- and third-place outings to round out the USF Alumni Invitational.
