#13 Lady Vols Drop 4-2 Decision at ITA National Team Indoor Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 13 Tennessee women's tennis team came up two points short against No. 5 Virginia, falling 4-2, in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Friday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center, on the campus of Northwestern University.
The Lady Vols (4-1) were unable to conquer Virginia (7-1) in doubles, leading to a 1-0 deficit. The No. 75th-ranked pair of Elza Tomase and Elim Yan dropped a 4-6 result to Karolina Kozakova and Melodie Collard. The No. 54-ranked duo of Vanesa Suarez and Maeve Thornton came up on the short end of a 3-6 decision against the No. 73rd-ranked tandem of Margaret Navarro and Sara Ziodato. Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso were up, 6-5, against the No. 23rd-ranked pair of Martina Genis Salas and Annabelle Xu before the Cavaliers locked up the doubles point.
In singles, Tennessee picked up some momentum, but it was not enough to hold off the Cavaliers. No. 104 Britez Risso notched a 6-1, 6-3 win against Martina Genis Salas to even the score up a one all. No. 77 Vanesa Suarez dropped her match to No. 64 Melodie Collard in a 6-7(1), 1-6 affair to put Tennessee behind by one. No. 7 Tomase topped No. 27 Annabelle Xu, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to lock the match at two apiece.
Maeve Thornton fell, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6,to Isabelle Lacy to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Cavaliers. Conley Raidt dropped the final point, falling to Blanca Pico Navarro, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (3).
Up Next: The Lady Vols will play in the back draw of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship and will await their opponent.
