Simpson Selected To Canada Softball Women’s National Team Roster
June 16, 2022 | Softball
OTTAWA, Ontario — After displaying her talents at last week's national team selection camp, Tennessee freshman pitcher Nicola Simpson was named to the Canada Softball Women's National Team Roster that will compete at the 2022 WNT Celebration Tour and the Canada Cup International Softball Championship this summer.
"We are so proud of Nicola's selection to the Canadian National Team roster," head coach Karen Weekly said. "She is one of the hardest working young women I've ever been around. This is a tremendous opportunity for her to compete with and against the best players on the international stage, and I know she will grow immensely from this experience."
Simpson is one of 20 athletes that will travel with Team Canada for Celebration Tour stops in Ontario (June 16-18) and Saskatchewan (June 29 to July 1) and the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C. (June 20-26).
The roster of 15 athletes for The World Games, held July 9-13 in Birmingham, Alabama, will be announced by June 20th.
The 2022 WNT Celebration Tour begins this week with a four-game series against The Netherlands, kicking off Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET. Games will be streamed live on the Softball Canada YouTube page.
Simpson made 14 appearances with two starts during her rookie season on Rocky Top, totaling 22 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts and a 2-0 record. Simpson's two victories came in back-to-back weekends after strong relief outings against Texas A&M (4/16) and East Carolina (4/24). She also posted solid performances against a pair of top-10 teams, going a career-long 4.2 innings vs. No. 10 Arkansas (3/19) with three strikeouts and spinning 3.0 innings with one earned run against No. 1 Oklahoma (2/26).
