Gibson Drives In Five, White Goes Distance To Highlight Saturday DH Sweep
March 05, 2022 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 17 Tennessee softball team had a couple of standout performances from underclassmen on Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, highlighting a pair of victories over South Alabama and Dartmouth at the Tennessee Invitational. Freshman McKenna Gibson drove in five runs in UT's 9-0 win over the Jaguars, while sophomore Ryleigh White went the distance for the Lady Vols in a 7-1 triumph against Dartmouth.
"It's two wins, that's the best part," head coach Karen Weekly said. "These tournaments can be pretty tiring, so I was just really proud of the team for playing really clean softball. We got good pitching performances, we played good defense and had timely hitting, and that's how you win ballgames."
Game 1 - No. 17 Tennessee 9, South Alabama 0
Lady Vol freshman McKenna Gibson was the catalyst for Tennessee offensively with five RBIs as the Lady Vols posted a 9-0 run-rule victory in six innings over South Alabama. UT rounded out round robin play at the Tennessee Invitational as the tournament's top seed for bracket play.
Gibson led the Big Orange at the dish, hitting 2-for-3 with a game-ending two-run homer, a two-run single and an RBI walk in Friday's opener.
Graduate pitcher Erin Edmoundson threw all six frames for the Big Orange and picked up her eighth win of the season. The lefty from Deer Park, Texas, scattered four hits and collected a pair of strikeouts in the victorious effort, bumping her season total to 45 Ks in 12 appearances.
The Lady Vols capitalized early with a five-run first, with the first two coming in on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Gibson and a hit-by-pitch drawn by Ashley Morgan. Super senior shortstop Ivy Davis drove in the third run on an RBI single into right field before junior outfielder Madison Webber brought two in on a single to center that put Tennessee ahead 5-0.
After a pair of scoreless innings from both teams, Tennessee added to its tally in the bottom of the fourth with Gibson's two-run single to right center. The freshman from Santa Clarita, California, brought in Rylie West and Amanda Ayala to give the Lady Vols a 7-0 lead through four.
Gibson put the game on ice in the bottom of the sixth, launching her third home run of the season and second of the weekend over the scoreboard in left center to end the game. The two-run shot brought in classmate Katie Taylor, and the Lady Vols walked off the field winners with the 9-0 run-rule triumph.
Game 2 - No. 17 Tennessee 7, Dartmouth 1
Sophomore pitcher Ryleigh White tossed her first complete game of the season as Tennessee picked up a 7-1 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday. The Sparta, New Jersey, native struck out four and allowed just two hits and one earned run in her second start of the year.
After Ashley Morgan walked and Ivy Davis got on with a single, freshman infielder Lair Beautae drove in UT's first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second. The Riverside, California, native drove a single through the right side to give the Lady Vols a 2-0 edge in the early going.
Tennessee put up three more in the third, beginning with an RBI double from Zaida Puni that was rocketed to left center and scored Amanda Ayala from second. Morgan brought two more in with a hard hit single off the wall in right, scoring pinch runners Anna Fox and Shakara Goodloe to provide a 5-0 lead for the Big Orange.
With two runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth, Dartmouth broke up the shutout when Mary Beth Cahalan grounded into a double play that allowed leadoff batter Billie McFadyen to score from third.
Tennessee added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings on a pair of Big Green errors. In the fourth, Ayala laid down a bunt single before a throwing error by the Dartmouth catcher allowed Kiki Milloy to score from second, and in the fifth, Beautae's grounder went past the glove of the Dartmouth shortstop and brought in pinch runner Katie Taylor from third to cement the game's final score of 7-1.
White retired the side in order in back-to-back frames to close out the complete game effort, pitching Dartmouth into a lineout, groundout, two flyouts and two popouts in the sixth and seventh innings.
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols round out the Tennessee Invitational Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m., taking on No. 2 seed Virginia in the tournament's bracket play final. The game will be streamed online via SEC Network+, with a free audio broadcast also available at UTSports.com.
