Lady Vols Blank James Madison to Open NCAA Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Tennessee women's tennis team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 domination over James Madison in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The win marks the third NCAA Tournament win for the Lady Vols (17-8) under the direction of head coach Alison Ojeda.
"James Madison is a very good team," Ojeda said. "They fought hard, played very well and forced us to compete at a high level to win. I'm very proud of the way our team started and ended the match with a high level of energy and determination. We have been practicing quite a few things that all came into play today."
The Lady Vols got off to a quick start over the Dukes (14-4), easily claiming the doubles point with wins on courts three and two.
The duo of junior Rebeka Mertena and sophomore Carly Briggs collected the first win of the day on court three. The pair dominated Amanda Nord and Natalia Nikolopoulou 6-1 for their fifth win as a pair.
The No. 32-ranked duo of Daria Kuczer and Esther Adeshina locked down the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph over Jona Roka and Kylie Moulin on court two. The duo picked up their third-straight win and 13th win this season.
In singles play, the Lady Vols picked up wins on courts four, three and five to secure the shutout.
Kuczer opened singles scoring with a win on 6-4, 6-1 win on court four over Moulin. The junior moves to an impressive 20-2 in dual-match play and is 26-7 overall in her debut season in Orange and White.
No. 66-ranked Carly Briggs secured UT's third point with a straight set win over Natalia Nikolopoulou. The sophomore downed the Duke 6-1, 6-4 to secure her seventh victory in dual-match play.
Senior Tenika McGiffin provided the final margin of victory with a 6-4, 6-0 domination over Alexis Franco. The Brisbane, Australia native moves to 16-4 in dual-match play and is 21-12 this season.
Up next, UT faces the winner of host Virginia and Long Island University on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
