Smokey Distributes Meals at Area Schools

Tennessee's beloved costumed mascot Smokey is brightening spirits during the COVID-19Â pandemic, spreading Big Orange spirit by helping distribute meals to students at area schools this month.
At food distribution sites throughout the area, families drive through school parking lots to receive free meals. Last week, Smokey visited three sites in Scott County, and he visited four more in Knox County this week.
Thousands of Tennessee families have taken advantage of the opportunity to receive free meals for their children while schools have been closed in response to the pandemic. At one Knox County school alone, more than 900 children receive meals each distribution day.
At Beaumont Magnet Academy in Knoxville, principal Windy Clayton said Smokey's appearance made meal distribution day extra special.
"Today was the best day ever," Clayton said. "Thank you for sending Smokey. He made so many little people and big people happy, and the world needs more happiness."
While practicing social distancing, Smokey utilized his lighthearted disposition and playful antics to spread joy during an otherwise challenging and stressful time.
Smokey's presence at area distribution sites this month continues a longstanding tradition of community outreach by the mascot and Tennessee's entire Spirit Squad.
"This was a unique opportunity to take Smokey to the fans since the fans haven't been able to come to Smokey," Tennessee Spirit Squad staff member Sara Blankenship said. "Seeing the kids smile and be excited that Smokey was there for them when they weren't expecting it was so great to experience."
Smokey has also made appearances in Zoom classrooms across the state and in virtual meetings to stay connected with fans throughout the pandemic.
