KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Entering the ninth-ever matchup between the Lady Vols and Tar Heels, six of the previous series results had been decided by two or fewer runs.

Tuesday's bout proved equally knotted as Tennessee (14-9) fell 3-2 to North Carolina (10-13, 3-3 ACC) to give up its second home contest of the year.

UT struck immediately with a long shot from senior Chelsea Seggern to lead off in the bottom of the first inning. It was the second baseman's fifth of the season and the Lady Vols 18th.

UT was 6-2 heading into the night when scoring runs in the first inning, but its early score would be the last time the Lady Vols would lead as UNC kept them off the board the following three innings.

UNC struck back in the top of the fourth, rallying off three runs to jump ahead 3-1, recording five hits in the half.

The Lady Vols added some pressure as Kaitlin Parsons made her way around the horn to score on a wild pitch and bring things within one run in the bottom of the fifth. However, UT was unable to get anything else going in the remaining frames and were retired in order in the sixth and leaving the tying run on to close the night.

Freshman Callie Turner (8-7) had some good stuff in the circle Tuesday night as she fanned eight batters. She gave up five hits and three walks in 6.0 innings of work.

Next Up
UT opens conference play in College Station, Texas, against the Aggies March 13 through 15. The Aggies currently sit in eighth in the SEC standings with a 16-9 overall record and are 1-2 in conference after falling to Kentucky last weekend. Last season, UT won the series 2-1, giving up game 3, 6-4. UT leads the overall series 15-5.
