Lady Vols Round Out Music City Scramble
October 11, 2020 | Women's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lady Vols closed out the final day of the Music City Scramble with four singles wins and three doubles wins on Sunday.
Â
"Vanderbilt hosted an outstanding event," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "Their coaches and trainers really did a great job, and we are thankful. In my 22 years of college tennis, this was the toughest, most focused season-opening competition I've seen. All SEC squads came to compete and all four teams are leaving better today than we were on Thursday."
Â
Junior Daria Kuczer earned a 7-6, 6-4 singles win over Vanderbilt's Amanda Meyer to stay perfect in the Music City Scramble. The junior improves to 3-0 in solo play as a Lady Vol.
Â
Senior Johanna Silva and Callie Creath picked up their third-straight doubles win in Nashville. The pair beat Elysia Pool and Lillian Gabrielsen of Ole Miss 6-4. The duo is 3-0 on the season and 4-0 in their career as a pair.
Â
Creath was also dominant in her first solo win of the fall, downing Grace Anne Jones of Ole Miss 6-0, 6-1.
Â
Senior Tenika McGiffin and freshman Esther Adeshina picked up their second-straight doubles win of the fall. The pair defeated Ole Miss duo Sabina Machalova and Alexa Bortles 6-4. McGiffin and Adeshina move to 2-1 on the season.Â
Â
"I'm excited to say that our program is moving in the right direction," Ojeda said. "Our shot selection and ability to build a point has really improved, which is something our team is proud of.Â
Â
"In addition to that, we've added some very good players to our roster. Esther (Adeshina) is getting better every time she steps on the court and Daria (Kuczer) is already a very mature and fierce competitor. She (Kuczer) fought hard in every point that was played and that's why she's leaving this event undefeated."
Â
In singles play, Adeshina picked up her first win as a Lady Vol on Sunday. The Bracknell, Great Britain product downed Reka Zadori of Ole Miss in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
Â
Juniors Rebeka Mertena and Kylie Duckworth earned their first win as a duo on Sunday. The pair defeated Zadori and Jones of Ole Miss 6-1.
Â
Sophomore Carly Briggs won a hard-fought bout, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (4), over Marcella Cruz of Vanderbilt. Briggs moves to 2-1 in solo play to start the season with the win.
Â
Up next, the Lady Vols will host the UT Fall Invite at the Goodfriend Tennis Center beginning on Friday. Fans will not be permitted at the event. Â
