#11 Vols Fall at Rutgers 1-0
August 29, 2019 | Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 11 Tennessee dropped its first road match of the season Thursday night, narrowly falling 1-0 at Rutgers. Senior forward Brittany LaPlant's goal in the 48th minute was the difference maker as the Scarlet Knights escaped with the upset.
Despite a 15-7 shot differential in favor of Rutgers (3-0), Tennessee possessed the ball for 58 percent of the match. The Vols kept pressure on the Scarlet Knights all night with more than two-thirds of UT's possession coming inside Rutgers' half of the pitch.
Senior forward MA Vignola led the Vols (2-1) with three shot attempts, including a rocket off the cross bar in the 14th minute that was Tennessee's closest chance at a score. Erin Gilroy came off the bench and had UT's lone shot on frame in the second half.
Both sides were knotted up through the first 45 minutes as Tennessee and Rutgers entered the halftime locker room scoreless. The Scarlet Knights held a 9-3 shot advantage during the opening frame, and rookie goalkeeper Lindsey Romig recorded her first two career saves for the Big Orange.
Rutgers (3-0) took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half as LaPlant scored from eight yards out. The goal was assisted by Nneka Moneme.
Redshirt-sophomore keeper Charli Pogany denied the Scarlet Knights an insurance goal in the 87th minute, as Moneme slipped past the Tennessee back line for a one-on-one with Pogany - who dove for a foot save to keep the score at 1-0.
Tennessee earned a couple of corner kicks in the final minutes but was ultimately unable to equalize the contest.
UP NEXT: The Vols will look to bounce back as their northeast road trip continues at Columbia on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff between the Vols and Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium in New York City.
