No. 8 UT Drops Series Opener to No. 16/22 UGA, 6-2
April 20, 2019 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – No. 8 Tennessee fell to No. 16/22 Georgia, 6-2, in Game 1 of a chilly series-opening doubleheader on Saturday. The teams battled the weather as rain fell intermittently during the contest, causing two brief rain delays.
Offensively, the Lady Vols were led by two-hit performances from Jenna Holcomb (2-for-3, 1 R) and Haley Bearden (2-for-4). The duo also drove in both of UT's runs.
Ashley Rogers got the start and was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits through 2.0 innings of work. Matty Moss was called on in the third frame and went on to throw 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. The pair combined to toss eight strikeouts.
Georgia struck first in the contest, scoring one run in the second inning. Alysen Febrey led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on Savana Sikes' RBI single through the left side.
The Bulldogs struck again in the third inning on three hits and a Tennessee error, taking a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth stanza, UT used a Bearden single to get on the board. Holcomb led off with a one-bagger to third and turned on the wheels to steal second two at-bats later. She then advanced to third on Chelsea Seggern's fielder's choice to second before scoring on a hit up the middle by Bearden.
Tennessee scratched another run across in the fifth to pull within one. With one out, Gracie Osbron walked and moved to second on Amanda Ayala's single to shortstop. Holcomb then landed a ball in short-center field, scoring Osbron to make it a 3-2 game before two straight outs put an end to the rally.
Answering in the sixth, Georgia plated three runs on two hits and a UT throwing error. Back-to-back runners reached on fielder's choices before a two-RBI triple and RBI double allowed three runs to score.
UT was held scoreless in the top of the seventh to preserve the 6-2 final.
