Series Split After #5 Lady Vols Drop 1-0 Pitchers' Duel to #15/18 Arkansas
March 23, 2019 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 5 Lady Vols dropped a pitchers' duel, 1-0, to No. 15/18 Arkansas on Saturday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium as a late seventh-inning rally fell short. The series stands split at 1-1 heading into the finale on Sunday.
Junior pitcher Caylan Arnold got the start for Tennessee (25-5, 3-2 SEC) and allowed the lone run of the game on three hits through 3.0 innings of work while striking out four batters. She was saddled with the loss and owns a 7-3 record on the season.
Lady Vol ace Matty Moss entered the game in long relief in the fourth, pitching four shutout innings while not allowing a hit. The senior retired eight of her 13 batters faced via strikeout and of her 56 pitches, 41 were strikes.
For Arkansas (22-8, 4-4 SEC), Mary Haff picked up the complete-game win to improve to 12-5 on the season. The right-hander allowed seven hits, but threw 15 strikeouts including five that got the Razorbacks out of three jams with runners in scoring position.
Tennessee first put runners on base in the third inning as Gracie Osbron singled to center field. Two at-bats later, Aubrey Leach reached on a one-bagger to third to put runners on first and second with two outs, but a strikeout ended the frame.
In the top of the fourth, Arkansas' Kati Warrick plated the only run of the contest on a solo shot off the scoreboard in left field. After Moss came in to pitch, the Razorbacks reached base just once on a walk in the sixth frame.
The Lady Vols threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, putting Kaili Phillips and Haley Bearden on thanks to back-to-back singles with one out. The duo then advanced to second and third on a passed ball, however, consecutive strikeouts prevented UT from scoring.
Tennessee's seventh-inning rally fell just short as the tying run was left stranded on second by Arkansas' Haff.
ON DECK: The Lady Vols host Arkansas in a rubber match to decide the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on ESPNU and a live radio broadcast will be carried on UTSports.com and the Tennessee Gameday App.
