STARKVILLE, Miss. – Senior Meghan Gregg and Sophomore Chelsea Seggern combined for five of the Lady Vols nine hits to lead No. 7 Tennessee to a 6-3 win over No. 24 Mississippi State on Sunday at Nusz Park.

After they were held to three runs in a loss on Saturday, the Lady Vols (44-11, 14-10 SEC) found their offensive stride early, scoring four runs in the opening inning to pull away from the Bulldogs (35-20, 7-17 SEC). Aubrey Leach led off the game with a walk before Gregg advanced her to second on a single. Seggern then stepped in and belted a home run over the right field fence to give UT a 3-0 lead. Ashley Morgan would double later in the inning to bring home Scarlet McSwain and add on to the hot start for Tennessee.

The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the third, as Mia Davidson hit a solo shot to left field.

The teams traded scoreless innings, but a leadoff double from Gregg in the fifth inning got a rally started for UT. After pinch runner Treasury Poindexter reached third on a groundout, McSwain singled through the left side to score Poindexter and regain the four-run lead. A fielding error two batters later allowed McSwain to come in from third to make it 6-1.

Although an Emily Heimberger single brought in two runs for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh, Caylan Arnold would shut the door for UT and preserve the win. Arnold went a complete seven innings in the winning effort, striking out two batters and giving up six hits to improve to 23-4 on the season.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols will travel to Columbia, Mo. next week for the SEC Softball Tournament. With Sunday's win, Tennessee earned the tournament's No. 4 seed, and will open up on Thursday, May 10, against the winner of LSU and Ole Miss.
