Lady Vols Win Home Opener, 13-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 5/5 Tennessee opened its home schedule with a 13-1 victory over Charleston Southern on Day 1 of the Tennessee Invitational.
The Lady Vols (17-1) scored four in the second inning, five in the third and four more in the fourth to put away the Jaguars (13-5) in five innings.
Caylan Arnold improved to 7-0 on the season with a seven strikeouts and one hit allowed over four innings of work.
Haley Bearden got the rally started in the second inning with a one out single and was able to advance to second on a wild pitch. Bearden then scored on the next batter by way of a error to put the Lady Vols on the board. After Cailin Hannon stole second and CJ McClain walked to get two runners on base, Aubrey Leach singled to center field, bringing in Hannon and increasing the lead to two. McClain scored on the following batter thanks to a throwing error from shortstop. Meghan Gregg then stepped in and delivered a base knock to bring home Leach and made it 4-0.
UT put up five runs in the third to give itself a commanding edge. A CJ McClain single on a 3-1 pitch scored pinch runner Treasury Poindexter. Leach followed that up by bringing home Hannon on a single of here own. With the bases loaded again, Gregg grounded out to second which gave the Lady Vols their third run of the frame. The next batter, Chelsea Seggern, continued her strong offensive start to 2018 with a two-RBI double that made it 9-0 in favor of the home team.
Freshman Ashley Morgan got another rally started in the fourth with a leadoff single up the middle. After Brooke Langston earned a pinch-hit walk, Sheridan Allen hit a bloop single to right field to load the bases with no outs. Leach then got her second and third RBI's on the day on a single that scored both Allen and Langston. With the bases loaded once again for Gregg, the senior drew a walk to bring in UT's fourth run of the inning.
The Jaguars were able to get on the board in the top of the fifth via a bases-loaded walk.
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols continue the Tennessee Invitational on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Toledo.
