Lady Vols Make It Six Straight with 9-3 Win Over Oregon State

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 11 Tennessee defeated Oregon State 9-3 on Friday to wrap up the second day of the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Lady Vols improved to 14-1 on the season and 4-0 in the tournament.
CJ McClain led Tennessee with three hits, while Jenna Holcomb and Meghan Gregg each added two hits. Gregg also drove in a team-high three runs and scored twice.
Caylan Arnold pitched three innings of relief to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Gregg got the Lady Vols on the board in the top of the first, blasting a three-run home run to right center after Aubrey Leach and Holcomb led off the game with singles to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead. It was Gregg's fifth home run of the season.
Oregon State scored twice in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 3-2, but Tennessee pushed across three more runs in the top of the fifth.
Gregg led off the frame by reaching on an error and advancing to third before Chelsea Seggern was hit by a pitch. Scarlet McSwain then doubled home the first run of the inning, giving the Lady Vols a 4-2 lead, before Ashley Morgan singled home another run.
McSwain later scored on an infield single to give the Lady Vols a 6-2 lead.
Oregon State responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the frame, but a strikeout and a double play ended the threat.
Tennessee put up another three-spot in the top of the sixth. Seggern got the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, before an Abby Lockman double with the bases loaded brought home two more runs and gave the Lady Vols a 9-2 lead.
Oregon State tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh on a McKenna Arriola leadoff homer, but Tennessee held on for the win.
Arnold struck out six in her three innings of work. Matty Moss pitched the last three frames, striking out three and only giving up two hits.
Tennessee will wrap up the Mary Nutter Classic on Saturday against No. 5/2 Oregon and Northwestern.
