CLEARWATER, Fla. – Sophomore third baseman Chelsea Seggern hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give No. 10 Tennessee the 7-4 win over USF on Saturday night as part of the Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Seggern came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning after USF (5-6) intentionally walked Meghan Gregg to load the bases with two outs. After taking the first pitch for a strike and fouling off the next two, Seggern drove the ensuing pitch to the wall in center field which cleared the bases. The three runs turned out to be the winning runs for the Lady Vols.
Tennessee (9-1) bounced back following an earlier tough loss to FAU behind the hot hand of sophomore pitcher Caylan Arnold who struck out nine batters in five innings of work.
The Lady Vols got on the board first by scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.
Gregg singled to center field and scored Aubrey Leach, and Jenna Holcomb scored after Seggern reached on a fielder's choice to give the Big Orange an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulls would get on the board when Lindsey Dwvitt doubled to right center in order to bring around Mia Fung. They added another run in the top-half of the fifth and then two in the sixth.
However, Tennessee stood firm to close out the win and even its record on the day.
Matty Moss picked up the win after going two innings. Gregg helped the Lady Vols at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing, adding two runs and a RBI. Seggern was the player of the game after going 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the win for the Lady Vols.
Game Notes: Ralph Weekly and Ken Eriksen both won Gold Medals as assistant coaches on the USA National Softball Teams – Weekly in 1996 (Atlanta, Georgia) and Eriksen in 2004 (Athens, Greece).
Up Next: Tennessee will close out the Michelle Smith Pediatric Canter Invitational Sunday when they face Marshall at 9 a.m. Â
