May 25, 2017 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee redshirt senior Cameron Brown was named to the 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-DistrictTM Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Teams, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.
Brown, a marketing major with a 3.63 cumulative GPA, was named to the Academic All-District 3 team for the second time in his career. Brown earned the honor last year as he then went on to win Academic All-American honors.
This year, Brown set the Tennessee school record in the hammer throw. Brown broke a 21-year-old school record as he posted a throw of 68.19m (223-9) at the SEC Relays. He surpassed Wes Boudreau's former school record and became a two-time school record holder. He set the school record in the weight throw during the 2016 campaign. Brown is also a two-time team captain.
He was the 2016 SEC champion in the weight throw and garnered 2016 USTFCCCA First Team Indoor All-American accolades after placing third in the men's weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships with Tennessee-record throw of 23.54 meters (77-2.75).
The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-DistrictTM Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Only first teams were chosen for at-large district recognition, so all honorees will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in June.
Brown and the rest of the Vols are competing in the NCAA East Prelims from Thursday to Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky.
