Heron Captures 5K Title at Open Water Nationals

CASTAIC LAKE, Calif. — Tennessee rising senior David Heron won the 5-kilometer national title Sunday at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championship.
Heron beat out Andrew Gemmell at the finish, reaching the finish banner in 57 minutes, 25.75 seconds. Gemmell was just over a quarter of a second behind in 57:26.08.
With the victory, Heron earned a spot on Team USA in the FINA World Championships for the second time.
Rising sophomore Taylor Abbott took sixth (57:35.32) and junior Sam Rice was 20th (58:06.85).
In Friday's 10k open water race, Heron paced the Vols with an 11th-place finish (1:59:57.11), just beating out Abbott (1:59:57.83). Rice was 16th (2:02:16.88).
