Vols Down Winthrop, Advance to 2nd Round of NCAAs
May 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C. -- The 24th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team took an early lead and never looked back in its 4-1 win over Winthrop in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Duke's Ambler Tennis Stadium.
"I'm proud of our Vols," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We played a tough Winthrop team who put a lot of balls in the court, and we were able to work through each match both mentally and physically. What makes our team so tough is the fact that we are excellent at the little things. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. Every single one of us believes that if we just stay focused on the foundation of who we are as a team then good things will come."
After splitting Courts 1 and 2 in doubles with the Eagles, the Vols (19-11) sealed the doubles point with a shutout win on Court 3. UT quickly built on its lead in singles, grabbing the first two courts to finish and taking a 3-0 advantage. WU took Court 1 to get on the board, but Tennessee's lead was insurmountable.
In doubles, Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck got things going for UT, defeating Caitlin Cridland and Alisa Soloveva, 6-3, on Court 2. Winthrop evened things up, though, getting a 6-4 win on Court 1 over Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic.
The duo of Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva sealed the doubles point with a 6-0 match on Court 3 against Aida Kelic and Alya Mourad.
In singles, Hammond downed Cridland, 6-4, 6-1, to get things going. Riley finished up soon after, outlasting Megan Kauffman in 6-3, 6-2 contest on Court 4. After dropping a match on Court 1, Gabby Schuck sealed the victory for the Vols, beating Mourad, 6-4, 6-3, on Court 6.
"I am so excited for our team," Ojeda said. "We have prepared well and deserve every opportunity that comes our way. We will get another one tomorrow afternoon at 4."
Tennessee will face the winner of Game 2 between Duke and Boston University on Saturday for a chance to advance to the final site in Athens, Ga. The price of admission for the match will be $5 for adults and $3 for kids (under 18).
