Freshmen Lead the Way in Rout of Oregon State
February 19, 2017 | Softball
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Caylan Arnold threw a complete-game shutout and Taylor Rowland drove in four runs as No. 15/14 Tennessee blew past RV/RV Oregon State, 14-0 (5), on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Cox Classic.
Arnold was spectacular in the circle en route to her first-career complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters and issuing no walks. After allowing the Beavers' first two hitters to reach base, the freshman retired 15 straight batters to end the game. Arnold improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory.
Rowland, a redshirt freshman, came up big at the plate, setting career highs with three hits, three runs and four RBIs to lead a potent Tennessee attack. Fellow freshman Chelsea Seggern also had a huge game with three RBIs, two runs and two hits, including her first-career home run.
Neither team was able to score in the first inning despite moving multiple runners into scoring position as both pitchers worked their way out of early jams. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Vols capitalized on their chances in the second, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead.
CJ McClain opened the scoring with an infield RBI single and Seggern scored later in the inning to make it 2-0. Rowland doubled in the third inning for her first RBI of the game and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Aubrey Leach later in the inning.
The Big Orange (9-0) busted the game open with a six-run fourth, extending their lead to 10-0. Scarlet McSwain, Rowland, Abby Lockman and Jenna Holcomb all had RBI hits in the frame. Rowland and Seggern capped the scoring in the top of the fifth with a double and a three-run homer to make it 14-0.
McKenna Arriola and Shelby Weeks had the only two hits for Oregon State (6-2) while freshman pitcher Nerissa Eason gave up nine runs in her first loss of the season.
FRESHMAN FRENZY: A trio of Vols' freshmen led the way in today's big win over Oregon State. Caylan Arnold threw her first ever complete-game shutout while Taylor Rowland drove in four runs and Chelsea Seggern hit her first-career homer, a three-run shot in the fifth inning.
ARNOLD SHINES AGAIN: Caylan Arnold put forth her most dominant performance yet with a complete-game shutout to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Maryville native retired the final 15 batters she faced and only allowed two hits in the game. She has yet to allow an unearned run this season and has given up just a single run in 20 innings pitched this year.
