COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Tennessee swimming team opens the 2017 half of the season with a dual meet Friday at South Carolina beginning at 4 p.m. at Carolina Natatorium.
BACK IN ACTION: Tennessee returns to dual meet competition for the first time since splitting a home meet against Auburn on Nov. 11, with the UT women (4-2, 3-0 SEC) winning and the men (1-4, 0-2) narrowly falling to the then-No. 5 Tigers.
Meghan Small won three events at the meet, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.03), the 200 backstroke (1:56.01) and the 400 individual medley (1:56.01). She was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: This is the Vols' first dual meet trip to South Carolina since fall 2011, a 167-132 win for the UT men and the women earned a 174-124 victory. The teams last met during the 2013-14 season at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, resulting in a 172-128 win for the UT men and a 169-124 win for the women.
IN THE RANKINGS: Tennessee's women are No. 17 in the most recent CSCAA top 25 poll, which was released Dec. 6.
SILVER AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Junior Peter John Stevens' last race ended with him on an international awards podium. He took second in the 50-meter breaststroke in the FINA Short Course World Championships on Dec. 11 in Windsor, Canada. He set the Slovenian record in a time of 25.95 seconds.
COUNTING TOWARD SOUTH CAROLINA: Preliminary results from the 1-meter and 3-meter diving this week at the Tennessee Diving Invitational will count toward Tennessee's dual meet at South Carolina on Friday.
Liam Stone earned a pair of first-place finishes for the Vols heading into the dual meet, winning the 1-meter (345.30) and 3-meter (365.40) over the South Carolina divers. Nick Rusek added a second-place finish on 1-meter (294.00).
Julia Vincent gave South Carolina two wins on the women's side, posting 337.65 on 3-meter and 299.45 on 1-meter. Tennessee sophomore Rachel Rubadue was second in both.
