KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee junior Liam Stone earned his first diving victory of new year Wednesday, taking first in the men's 3-meter springboard at the Tennessee Diving Invitational.
Stone, last year's NCAA 1-meter champion, scored 418.85 to win the finals of the 3-meter competition, nearly 20 points ahead of second-place Kyle Goodwin of Missouri, who finished with 399.40.
Stone has scored over 400 five times and has four victories on the 3-meter springboard this school year.
Sophomore Nick Rusek just missed out on the 12-diver finals, placing 13th (310.05). Senior Michael Howell was 26th (245.15).
In the women's 1-meter competition, sophomore Rachel Rubadue placed 10th overall with a score of 248.60.
The meet concludes Thursday with the men's and women's platform diving competition, beginning at 11 a.m.
Comments from diving coach Dave Parrington: "He missed a dive a little in the prelims, but overall, I was pleased with Liam's overall consistency today. It was a very good, competitive event. Liam was in second in the final two rounds, then took over the contest. It's good to see how we respond in those situations. Nick just missed the final, but he's getting more consistent. Some mistakes that we are working to iron out cost him today. Michael Howell's consistency was better.
"I was happy with Rachel's prelims in particular. She ran out of steam a little in the finals. We'll continue to build on that and get ready for SECs."
