Late Comeback Falls Short for Vols

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Tennessee women’s tennis team dropped its match in the first round of the SEC Tournament to No. 40 Ole Miss, 4-3, Wednesday at the LSU Tennis Complex.
After going down 3-0, the Volunteers (8-17, 1-12 SEC) stormed back to tie the match at 3-3 with the Rebels (13-10, 3-10 SEC), but Ole Miss came from behind on Court 2 to win in a tiebreaker for the match.
Freshman Sadie Hammond got things started for the Vols, defeating 29th-ranked Arianne Hartono, 7-5, 7-5, on Court 1. It was her second win against a top-30 player.
After taking the first set against Zalina Khairudinova, junior Brittany Lindl fell behind 5-3 in the second set, but a late surge helped her come from behind to win the match, 7-5, 7-5.
Freshman Ashley Bongart started slow, dropping the first set, but she responded to win her match against Marija Milutinovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, on Court 6, tying the match at 3-3.
With the win by Bongart, the match came down to Court 2 between junior Eve Repic and 84th-ranked Natalie Suk. Repic lost the first set but responded with a win in the second set to force a third.
Repic took an early lead and was close to winning the match, but Suk didn’t give up. The set went to a tiebreaker and Suk’s momentum was too much, giving her a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (3) win over Repic to clinch the match for the Rebels.
