KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers took the second set but could not close out other close sets in a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20) loss to Missouri on Friday at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Freshman Tessa Grubbs had 12 kills and sophomore Erica Treiber added 10 to lead Tennessee (15-9, 5-6 SEC). Missouri (20-4, 11-1) was led by 16 kills by Melanie Crow and a double-double by Carly Kan (10 kills, 12 digs).
The Vols had more kills (53 to 50) and more digs (56 to 48) than Missouri, but the Tigers held the advantage with 11 team blocks while the Vols had none. Miscues also spelled the difference as Tennessee committed 25 hitting and 17 service errors, while Missouri had 13 hitting and nine service errors.
"I was very pleased with the energy we played with and how hard we played, and you have to do that against a good team like Missouri," Tennessee head coach Rob Patrick said. "We had more kills than they did, and we had more digs than they did. We just lost the blocking battle. We couldn't get in front of their hitters, and their hitters did a fantastic job. We just made too many errors."
Tennessee freshman Sedona Hansen collected her 11th double double of the season with 45 assists and 13 digs to lead the Tennessee offense.
Missouri led the first set from the outset, scoring the first three points and staying ahead from there. The Vols closed the lead to two points on a service error by the Tigers, but Missouri won four of the next five points to go up 20-15 on a kill by Kira Larson. Missouri eventually closed out the set 25-18 on a 3-0 run.
Tennessee was dominant at the outside of the second set, running ahead 7-1 on a kill by Bri Holmes. Missouri chipped away at the lead and then won eight of nine points at a stretch to take a 21-19 lead on a kill by Melanie Crow.
With Missouri leading 22-20, the Vols went on a tear to close out the set, winning five of the last seven points. Tessa Grubbs wrapped up the set 25-23 with a kill.
Missouri jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the third set and stayed ahead from there. The Vols won four of five points at one stretch to cut the lead to 16-13, but the Tigers reeled off seven of the next eight points to take a 23-14 lead and eventually closed out the set 25-17.
The fourth set went back and forth before Missouri broke away by winning six of eight points to go ahead 18-14. The Vols closed the lead to 20-18 on a kill by Grubbs, but the Tigers stayed ahead the rest of the way, eventually closing out the set and match 25-20.
