Volleyball Improves to 3-0 with CSU Sweep

TOWSON, Md. — The Tennessee Volunteers won their third match to start the season with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-14) victory over Coppin State on Saturday morning at the Towson Invitational.
Transfer newcomers Nora Reed and Stephanie Buss and sophomore Kanisha Jimenez recorded nine kills each to give the Vols their first-ever win over Coppin State.
The Vols return to the court at 2:30 p.m. to take on Saint Francis (Pa.) to wrap up play at their first tournament of the season.
Buss led Tennessee offensively in the first set with five kills and a .556 hitting percentage. The Vols won seven of eight points to get to set point at 24-13. Three points later, Reed put away a clean kill to give Tennessee the set, 25-15.
In the second set, Tennessee took a 4-3 lead on a kill by freshman Erica Treiber and led from there. A 5-0 run midway through the set gave Tennessee a 17-10 lead. The Vols closed the set by winning six of the final seven points. Reed again provided the finish to the set with an attack that Coppin State could not block back in play to win 25-17.
Tennessee pulled ahead early in the third and never looked back. Jimenez had six of her nine kills in the set, putting away match point at 25-14.
Senior Lexi Dempsey led Tennessee with 36 assists. Junior libero Bridgette Villano had 13 digs, and Brooke Schumacher had her first double-digit kill match with 10.
