KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vols (11-12, 3-8) fell 4-0 on Senior Day to the No. 26 Ole Miss Rebels (12-9, 4-8) on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
"We didn't compete great today," co-head coach Mike Patrick said after the match. "Laurence Guevremont played her heart out on Friday, and she still isn't quite 100 percent. She didn't have much in the tank. Tiffany Tavares couldn't get on track. She set up the point well, but she had a lot of unforced errors. Everyone else competed well, though. Overall, the last couple of weeks have been pretty good. We have done everything we could."
The Rebels wasted no time getting a lead. After going down 1-0 on all three courts in doubles, Ole Miss quickly recovered and put the pressure on the Lady Volunteers.
Tavares and sophomore Victoria Olivarez pulled within one game of Iris Verboven and Marija Milutinovic at 5-4 on court 3, but the duo ran out of steam as they fell 8-4. Guevremont and fellow sophomore Eve Repic couldn't get things going for the Lady Vols either as Erin Stephens and Mia El Kamash defeated the team 8-5 on court 2, winning the doubles point for Ole Miss.
In singles, the Lady Vols came out playing much better, but it was too late as the Rebels jumped out to quick leads on several courts.
Tavares was bested 6-0, 6-1 by Marija Milutinovic on court 6. Guevremont fell 6-2, 6-0 to Erin Stephens on court 4. The match was clinched when senior Joanna Henderson lost to Julia Jones, the No. 14 ranked singles player in the country, 6-4, 6-3 on court 1.
Although the final score was a 4-0 sweep, the Lady Vols set themselves up to win a couple of matches before the match finished. Senior Caitlyn Williams and Olivarez both led in the second set after winning the first.
As for the seniors, it was the last time they would play in front of a home crowd. Williams and Henderson will exit as one of the top doubles duos in Tennessee history. The two have won two Tennessee Fall Invite Doubles Titles together and two singles titles during their four years on Rocky Top.
"You can see how far they have come," Patrick said about his seniors. "Joanna has come from playing the No. 6 spot all the way to No. 1 and is competing with top-20 players in the country. That is a huge development process. Caitlyn never got to really show how good of a player she truly is. She has played pretty competitive with people in the top half of the lineup without practicing. There aren't many players who can do that. We are sad to see them both go, but they gave us everything they could. I am proud of them and what they will do. They will be successful for the rest of their lives."
The Lady Vols will be back in action next weekend as they travel to South Carolina on Friday and Florida on Sunday before heading to the SEC Tournament.
"We have to rest up and try to get ready to play a good match against South Carolina," Patrick said. "We still have the conference tournament. We have pride, so we will do the best we can to win and represent Tennessee as well as possible. We will see if we can give it everything we got on Friday."
