Carner became the first Tennessee woman to earn first-team All-America honors in the 400 IM since 1989 when she took seventh in the event Friday night. She lowered her school record to 4:05.97.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Tennessee reached the top-eight awards podium three more times Friday at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The 200-yard medley relay team led off the night session with a third-place finish. Junior Amanda Carner became the first Tennessee woman in 26 years to earn first-team All-America honors in the 400 individual medley by taking seventh place. Senior Molly Hannis rounded out Tennessee's scoring, placing fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
With one day left in the championship meet, Tennessee is ninth with 110 points. California leads with 383.5 points.
Hannis and Carner both started the evening session doing their part in Tennessee's 200 medley relay. Carner swam the opening backstroke leg and was followed by Hannis, Harper Bruens and Faith Johnson. The team took third in 1:36.29.
Anna DeMonte, who swam backstroke on the relay in the preliminaries, subbed in for Carner on the awards podium while she prepared for the next event.
Swimming in her first individual NCAA final, Carner lowered her own school record by more than a second, finishing seventh in 4:05.97.
Carner became the first Tennessee woman to earn All-America honors in the 400 IM since Stephanie Brinser placed fourth in the event in 1989.
Two events later, Hannis placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 58.77. It was the third time in her career she has scored in the event for Tennessee.
Saturday wraps up the championship with the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle, platform diving and 400 freestyle relay.
