KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --The Tennessee women's soccer team had two players earn NSCAA All-South Region honors in goalkeeper Julie Eckel and defender Susan Ferguson as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America this afternoon.
Tennessee has now had 23 players earn NSCAA All-Region honors and 35 selections overall in its 20-year history.
Both Eckel and Ferguson had stellar senior seasons and were instrumental in helping the Vols become one of the top defensive teams in the Southeastern Conference.
Eckel was named a first-team all-region selection after recording a record-breaking senior campaign. The Cordova, Tenn., native was also named first-team All-SEC after leading the conference with eight shutouts and an .818 save percentage this season. She was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice this year and made 81 stops to become the Vols' career saves leader with 335.
Eckel has played in and started more games than any goalkeeper in program history and ranks first all-time in minutes played (7,411:11) and save percentage (.817). Her 0.91 goals against average ranks second all-time at Tennessee as does her 31 career shutouts. She also ranks third in career victories with 44.
Ferguson was a third-team all-region selection after helping lead the Vols to an SEC best nine shutouts this season. The Arlington, Va., native started every game for UT and tied for the team lead among defenders with three points. She was also the only Tennessee defender to score a goal this season.
