BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- The Vols concluded round two of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown tied for fourth place after shooting a season-low round of 277. Sophomore Anna Newell continued to lead Tennessee with a seven-under performance.
After the Tennessee's strong outing, head coach Judi Pavon stated, "We had a nice team score today because of two really low rounds. We need to get five good scores in tomorrow."
Newell's round of 65 is the lowest recorded by a Tennessee player this season. The round also marks a new career low for Newell.
Both Emmie Pietila and Hannah Pietila, who is competing as an individual in the tournament, also recorded new career lows in the round. Emmie Pietila shot 66 and finished the day tied for fifth place at eight-under. Hannah Pietila bested her previous career low by two strokes. Her round of 67, combined with her first round score (70), moved her into a tie for eleventh place.
"All three girls had record low scores today so that was amazing for them! They all did a great job mentally as well as physically to score so low," added Pavon.
Junior Lucia Polo shot 73 in the round, finishing with a two-day total of 142. Blakesly Warren and Shannon Brooks both posted totals of 148 (+4).
No. 60 San Jose State took the lead from No. 52 Michigan early in the round and finished the day with a score of 275. No. 52 Michigan dropped to second place (-22) and No. 46 Vanderbilt finished one stroke behind in third with a two-day total of 555. My Leander of San Jose State continued to lead the field at 12-under par.
"We are around eight shots from the lead which is possible in team golf. I would like to finish off the fall with everybody playing well," concluded Pavon.
