MADISON, Wis. -- Hannah Wilkinson scored twice in the first half, Milwaukee committed an own goal and Amy Neal and Gracie DeGooyer added goals in the second half as Tennessee opened the 2014-15 athletic year for Big Orange Nation with a 5-0 win over Milwaukee.
Tennessee (1-0) enjoyed goals from Wilkinson in the eighth and 32nd minutes, a Milwaukee own goal in the 42nd minute, Neal's goal in the 48th minute and a score by DeGooyer in the 70th minute. Sophomore Anna McClung had assists on Wilkinson's second goal and Neal's score.
"All wins are good wins, especially when it's early in the season and you're still trying to sort some things out as a team," Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said. "I thought we scored some very good goals tonight with contributions from veteran kids but at the same time we had a couple of young kids contribute and score goals for us. Great night, great first win and now our attention turns to Wisconsin."
Junior goalkeeper Jamie Simmons earned her first Tennessee win and her first shutout as a Volunteer, making three saves along the way. The shutout was the 132nd in UT history.
Tennessee's five scores were its most since a 6-0 win at Mississippi State on Sept. 23, 2013. UT had a 12-10 advantage on shots in the game.
UT's five goals tied for its second-most in a season opener and its most since score five goals in the 2008 opener vs. Chattanooga. UT's most goals in an opener came in a 7-0 win over Chattanooga in the first game in program history on Aug. 30, 1996. Tennessee also had five goals against Chattanooga in the 1998 opener.
The Orange and White has scored three or more goals in all three of its season openers under Pensky (4-0 win vs. Samford in 2012, 3-1 win over Oklahoma in 2013).
Tennessee was aggressive early on with several attacks in the first five minutes and strong possession. In the eighth minute, Wilkinson collected the ball off a UWM center back and ripped a shot to the right post for her first goal of the season.
In the 32nd minute, Susan Ferguson played a ball forward to Anna McClung who found Wilkinson for a header score to the near post, giving Tennessee a 2-0 advantage.
Carlyn Baldwin took a corner kick from the left side in the 42nd minute and the ball deflected off of Milwaukee's Rachael Van Keulen, resulting in a UWM own goal and pushing UT's lead to 3-0.
Tennessee aggressive play early on was reflected in its 8-1 shot advantage in the first half.
UT kept the offensive momentum going in the second half when Amy Neal headed in a cross from McClung in the 48th minute, scoring near the right post.
Gracie DeGooyer broke past the goalkeeper in the 70th minute for a score near the right post. Cali Hutson set her up with beautiful ball played into the box from the left side. DeGooyer is the first UT freshman to score a goal since Amalie Thestrup scored in the 86th minute against Ole Miss on Oct. 4, 2013.
Tennessee will next face Wisconsin on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. UT makes its 2014 home debut on Aug. 29 against BYU.
