KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteer Baseball Team will welcome in-state opponent Austin Peay State for their first and only scrimmage of the fall this Sunday, Nov. 2 beginning at 2 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Due to impending weather conditions and temperatures, the scrimmage game has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 2.
"I feel this scrimmage will be a great opportunity for our fans to get a glimpse of this year's team," Head Coach Dave Serrano said. "I'm really excited to play Sunday against Austin Peay. They're expecting a really good team coming back from last year and it will be a pretty competitive game. Both teams will be able to practice in some game situations and that will be a way to help us go back to the drawing board after fall ball to identify the things we need to work on."
Among the pitchers expected to throw against APSU, Tennessee's Steven Kane, Zach Reid, Zach Warren and Jacob Westphal will all see time on the mound, as well as returners Andrew Lee, Bret Marks, Hunter Martin, Drake Owenby, Kyle Serrano and Tei Vanderford.
Tennessee's fall roster boasts 13 newcomers, including Cypress College (Calif.) transfer Kane and 2014 NAIA National Champion Chris Hall, formerly with Cumberland University. Within the team's 2014-15 recruiting class, ranked 13th in the nation by Perfect Game, seven are pitchers, two are catchers and four are top-ranked position players.
"We have a long way to go as a team, but you can start to see the structure of a good team coming together," Serrano said. "We have SEC pitching throughout now, we're deep on the mound and we have a lot of position players back. My challenge to this team was, we have to be different. And I believe we're ready to take that next step and start doing things that everybody can be proud of."
Next week, Nov. 3-7, marks the final week of fall practice for the Tennessee Volunteers and will include an Orange and White World Series, a set of three intrasquad games scheduled for midweek. A detailed schedule of the Series will be released in the coming days on UTSports.com. All games are free and open for the public to attend.
