Lady Vols Open Strong in Regionals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After having day one of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships off, the Lady Vols began the tournament with a hot start.
The day began with two rounds of doubles. Tennessee's teams were Henderson/Williams, Tavares/Guevremont and Lindl/Olivarez.
Sophomores Brittany Lindl and Victoria Olivarez were the first to finish with a quick 8-2 win over Storie/Coots from UT-Chattanooga. Junior Tiffany Tavares and sophomore Laurence Guevremont were next to finish, but they fell short in a 8-4 loss to Rodriguez/Velasquez of Louisville.
The final team to finish was the senior duo of Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams. They played a close 8-6 match with Memphis duo Tymchenkol/Morga that ended in a Vols win. The win was also the first match of the season for Williams who missed the Furman Fall Classic recovering from a shoulder injury.
The doubles success didn't stop there for Tennessee. Both teams cruised past their opponents to earn their spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament, which will be played tomorrow morning.
The Lady Vols were just as successful in singles as doubles. Henderson, Tavares, Guevremont and Olivarez all won their matches handily and advance to the second round while Lindl dropped a tough one to end the day.
The team finished the day winning eight of their 10 matches on day two of the tournament.
Doubles will kick off the day three of the tournament tomorrow with the quarterfinals beginning at 9:00 a.m., which will be followed by two rounds of singles at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
