Brown Lifts UT to Overtime Win, 1-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Caroline Brown scored a penalty kick in the second overtime period to lead Tennessee to a 1-0 victory over William & Mary to start the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at Regal Stadium.
Brown kicked into the right corner with 3:26 left in the second overtime to help Tennessee to a 3-0 start for the first time in program history.
William & Mary dropped to 0-2.
The first half was a scoreless battle with UT enjoying a 14-1 shot advantage. William & Mary applied some early pressure in the first 10 minutes, keeping the Lady Vols on their heels. Tennessee responded with a with attacking runs mostly on the left side of the field with Ashlee Burt firing four shots (one on goal) off the bench before the break.
In the first match of the Lady Vol Classic, Akron defeated VCU 2-1.
The tournament picks back up Sunday with the Lady Vols playing VCU at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Tennessee's last 0-0 tie came on Sept. 4, 2009, on the road against Minnesota ... Friday was Tennessee's first overtime match of the season. The squad played four overtime games in 2011 with a 2-2 record ... Julie Eckel recorded her second shutout of the season, both of them coming at home.
