USA Starts Canadian Open With Win

SURREY, B.C. -- Coming off the World Cup of Softball Championship, Team USA opened the Canadian Open with a 5-4 comeback win over Venezuela in nine innings. Lauren Gibson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lady Vols co-head coach Karen Weekly is serving as an assistant coach with the Team USA during the tournament.
The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth after allowing a run in the top of the frame to claim their first game in the event north of the border.
Gibson singled home Valerie Arioto in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Eagles took a lead 3-2 later in the inning. Venezuela tied the the game in the top of the seventh before the eventful ninth inning where USA was able to secure the win.
Michelle Moultrie drove in Stacey May-Johnson with two outs to give the Americans the walk-off win.
Team USA returns to action on Thursday with a pair of games. The Eagles take on Puerto Rico at 6:30 p.m. ET and Australia at 11:30 p.m. ET in the night cap.
