Fighting the Good Fight

In August 2010, longtime Tennessee assistant swimming coach Joe Hendee took a leave of absence to battle cancer. Now, in April, his team fights with him.
The Volunteers swimming and diving team formed a group to participate in Friday's Relay For Life, an all-night walk-a-thon and the signature event of the American Cancer Society. Every member of the swimming and diving team, as well as every staff member, is participating. The Vols are currently leading the charge, too, as they are the event's top fundraisers, banking around $7,000.
"Joe always said, `Fight the good fight. Finish the race. Keep the faith.' We just want to stand behind Joe and fight cancer along with him," Coleman Weibley, the program's operations intern and captain for the Relay for Life team, said. "He has always been willing to drop everything to help someone, so now it's our turn."
As the event winds down, the entire team plans on walking the very last lap of the event in honor of coach Hendee, who dutifully served Tennessee for 32 years.
The event takes place at UT's TRECS facility at 6 p.m. Friday and will last through 6 a.m. Saturday.
