UT divers completed the three-day competition at the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Wednesday with the platform event.
Virginia Tech's Logan Shinholser and Auburn's Daniel Mazzaferro dueled for the top spot, with Shinholser coming out on top with 423.40 points to Mazzaferro's 406.15.
Tennessee senior co-captain Michael Wright was the top Vol finisher, placing fourth with a score of 313.65 points.
"This was my first tower event of the season," Wright said. "Overall, I thought my performance was pretty average. Three out of my six dives I'm still working on. But there were a lot of strong divers here today and it was good to see what the competition looks like this year."
Sophomore Jordan Mauney finished in eighth place with a career-best 292.85 points. Of the seven who placed ahead of Mauney, five were divers that could be his competition at the SECs.
"I think I did pretty well today," Mauney said. "Most of the SEC divers are here at this event, so eighth place today is pretty good. I'm hopeful that at SECs it will all be there for me."
Diving coach Dave Parrington agreed with Mauney, a Signal Mountain, Tenn., native.
"Jordan was solid the first couple of days," Parrington said. "But he showed some stuff today. His performance on platform was very good for his confidence and will help in the future."
Junior Ryan Helms finished 11th with a score of 270.20 points. Sophomore Brent Sterling placed 22nd with 229.85 points.
"My expectations for today were a little higher than the results, but as a whole I think it was a very good week for us," Parrington said. "We didn't dive every time as well as we could have, but it taught us what we need to work on moving forward."
The Tennessee swimming and diving team returns to action Saturday when the Vols play host to Virginia in UT's first dual-meet of 2011.
